PROMOTE EMERGING

Demonstrate Systems Thinking by Making Connections to Larger System of Education
OVERVIEW
In order to adhere to my educational philosophy, it is necessary to step back and assess initiatives to determine if learning outcomes are being met and if my department is serving students effectively. Recent efforts to do this included developing a case study. From a broad perspective, I explored the issue of homogenization in higher education. I then made the Office of Student Engagement the focal point. I examined my department’s current programming initiatives and determined how to promote my institution’s emerging identity with distinctive programs. Developing recommendations for change allowed for me to determine my role in contributing to my institution’s new strategic plan. Identifying my role in this process validates my position and encourages me to continue to seek a means for supporting institutional success.
IMPORTANCE
Developing this case study revealed that making broad institutional changes for the future requires an understanding of the past. By exploring the history of higher education, I revealed the causes of the permeating issue of homogenization. I then narrowed my focus. I benefited from examining my own institution through a critical lens and identifying how to address this issue. I determined that, by developing distinctive programming, my colleagues and I may positively contribute to change. Being able to continuously identify my role in my institution's initiatives is essential in order to be actively engaged. Revealing methods to support progress is important to advance my institution's emerging identity and support the student population.

IMPACT
This research experience emphasized the value of Student Affairs. While planning institutional programs and continuously meeting with students to organize multiple events at once, it is easy to become engulfed by the day-to-day routine. However, by taking a step back, I enhanced my perspective of my role at my institution. This revealed the importance of being intentional. When my colleagues and I are deliberate with programming and adhere to our institution’s mission, we directly contribute to its emerging identity.
